The Early Life of Edgar Allen Poe

  • Edgar Allan Poe's life was considered to be a mystery.
  • His parents were actors.
  • Poe never knew a lot about his parents.
  • His father left the family and his mother died when he was only three years old.
  • Edgar Allan Poe lived with John Allan and Frances Allan in Richmond, Virginia.
  • John Allan was a very successful merchant who sold tobacco.
  • He was close with Frances, but not with John.
  • He wrote poems on the back of Allan's business papers since he preferred to write poetry instead of working for profits.
  • In 1826, Edgar Allan Poe went to the University of Virginia.
  • He gambled when he was in college in order to earn money to pay off his college costs since Allan didn't pay for it all.
  • He left the Allan's home after he found out that his fiancee Elmira Royster got engaged to another man.
